Choosing a kayak paddle

Once you have decided which kayak to get, it is time to choose a paddle.

The market today consists of a multitude of different paddles where the biggest difference is material and weight. A kayak paddle with a low weight allows you to paddle longer distances without getting tired. A simpler kayak paddle is heavier but also more durable.

  • Lightweight kayak paddle – Under 800 grams, composite material
  • Medium kayak paddle – 900-1100 grams, Fiberglass, plastic blend
  • Simpler kayak paddle – Over 1100 grams, Plastic, aluminum shaft

Paddle blade and shaft

The blade and shaft of the paddle are also important when choosing a kayak paddle. If you are looking for a lightweight paddle, the shaft is usually made of carbon fiber. This makes the shaft stiff – which gives the paddler more power in each stroke. However, a paddle with a carbon fiber shaft is more sensitive to shock compared to a paddle made of fiberglass or aluminum. An aluminum kayak paddle is durable but a little heavier, a fiberglass shaft is a little heavier than a carbon fiber shaft but still lighter than an aluminum shaft.

The size of the paddle blade is also important. A large blade is suitable for those who want to paddle shorter trips, raft or surf with your kayak. A smaller blade is suitable for those who want to paddle longer trips with a higher paddling frequency and a heavily loaded kayak.

Paddle length

If you are going to paddle a recreational or sea kayak, you should aim for a paddle between 210 and 220cm. The length of the paddle depends on the width of the kayak and where the seating point is in the kayak, as well as the paddling technique you use.

  • High paddle frequency – short paddle and small blade area
  • Low paddle frequency – longer paddle and larger blades
